Over the past several years, I have had the privilege of working in collaboration with the amazing women of the Union of Domestic Workers of the City of São Paulo (Sindicato das Trabalhadoras Domésticas do Municipio de São Paulo, STDMSP). Domestic workers belong to one of the most marginalized labor categories in the world and suffer habitual oppression as a result of their gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic location, and migratory status. The STDMSP is one of the most dynamic domestic worker organizations in Brazil, and it has a remarkable track record of fighting against labor rights abuses and promoting the empowerment of domestic workers.
I have been fortunate to take part in the union’s activities, including recruitment, network- and community-building, and information diffusion efforts. In collaboration with the STDMSP’s executive committee (diretoria), we have co-created three research projects designed to promote the empowerment of domestic workers in São Paulo. We have received funding from the International Domestic Workers Federation (FITH) to support these projects, which are ongoing.
The STDMSP celebrated its 30 years anniversary in December of 2020, in the midst of a public health and economic crisis that left Brazil reeling. However, the union continued functioning during this crisis, despite the multiple sanitary, logistical, and legal impediments to its activities that arose as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. To adapt, the STDMSP further diversified its activities by offering domestic workers solidarity services in addition to advocacy. The STDMSP remains strong in its struggle for domestic workers rights and empowerment.
I wish to thank the STDMSP’s diretoras for the trust they place in me. These indefatigable women are a true inspiration of generosity, compassion, civic engagement, and activism.
